Paper Samplers and Experimental Bookbinding

A practical two day course showing you a range of experimental techniques using found and recycled materials with Jennifer Collier. The skills learnt over each day will feed into one another, allowing you to create a range of samplers and books to use in your ongoing practice.
Over the two days you will:
- Create experimental samplers using paper and stitch
- Create surfaces, by waxing, trapping, layering and embedding into plastics, papers and fabrics
- Learn a wide range of hand and machine techniques to embellish and make beautiful experimental samplers.
- Use techniques including covered bindings, button loops, covered buttons, covered button holes, paper pockets, patchworking, backstitch, cross stitch, Picot stitch and needlace stitch
- Make into a traditionally bound 3 section A5 soft backed sketchbook.
Accommodation can be provided with this course making this a fully immersive learning experience and giving you the time and space to develop a new peer network.
If you do choose to stay with us a bespoke evening meal as well as breakfast and lunch will also be provided.

Paper pioneer Jennifer Collier creates exquisite sculptures from vintage recycled materials in conjunction with stitch; a contemporary twist on traditional textiles. The papers serve as both the inspiration and the media for the work, with the narrative suggesting the forms. Through this marriage of unlikely materials old papers are transformed into something truly unique, delicate and complex.
Most recently Jennifer has been collecting rarely used, heritage stitches and discovering how to translate the art of lost stitches onto paper, as these techniques are an important part of our creative heritage and she wants to continue to invest time in them to keep them in the present, offering them on to future generations. Jennifer is giving new life to things that would otherwise go unused, unloved or be thrown away…
Jennifer completed a BA (hons) in Textiles (Print, Knit and Weave) in 1999 at Manchester Metropolitan University, and has had her work featured in over 60 magazines and over 15 books to date, including Thames and Hudson’s ‘Encore: The New Artisans’. Jennifer is internationally exhibited and has stocked galleries such as the Museum of Art and Design, in New York, Liberty and the V&A. Jennifer has worked on many site specific, public arts commissions, most recently for the National Trust at Packwood House, Shugborough Hall and Coughton Court. In 2010 Jennifer founded Unit Twelve Gallery, a contemporary craft exhibition, art workshop and studio space, that hosts a regularly changing programme of high quality, contemporary craft exhibitions, as well as being home to 6 artists studio spaces; open Thursday-Saturday, 10-4pm.
Experimental Samplers using paper and stitch : this first workshop will combine Jennifer’s trademark experimental techniques with traditional embroidery techniques. In the morning you will create surfaces, by waxing, trapping, layering and embedding into plastics, papers and fabrics, and then in the afternoon you will learn a wide range of hand and machine techniques to embellish these to make beautiful experimental samplers. These techniques will include covered bindings, button loops, covered buttons, covered button holes, paper pockets, patchworking, backstitch, cross stitch, Picot stitch and needlace stitch to name a few.
Experimental Bookbinding : You will be shown Jennifer’s trademark experimental techniques, such as waxing, stitching and trapping recycled papers to create sketchbook pages. These will then be made into a traditionally bound 3 section A5 soft backed sketchbook. In this workshop you will be encouraged to create exciting surfaces and bring in techniques learnt in the previous days workshop.
We will be using sewing machines in day one of this workshop (day two they will be available if participants wish to use them, but not essential) all machines will be provided, you are not requires to bring your own machines.

Yes! We provide refreshments throughout the day and a home-cooked lunch which is freshly prepared in our Granary kitchen. Lunch is served around our communal dining table, offering you a great chance to get to know everyone on the course and share in the making processes you have been developing throughout the day. Please advise us of any dietary requirements before arrival.
Yes! All of our bedrooms here at Clayhill are en-suite so you will have your own private space to retreat to and relax in after spending your day in the meditative space of the Studio. We provide you with your own towels and bathroom products for use throughout your stay and you can enjoy the extensive grounds well into the evening. If you do choose to stay with us a bespoke evening meal as well as breakfast and lunch will also be provided.

Working with Deborah and Michael was such a pleasure. They understood the project from the beginning, what the needs of the makers and our audiences would be, and acted as thoughtful ambassadors for the project when we were not able to be there. Every aspect of the exhibition and events was facilitated in such a calm and confident manner, which made my job of coordinating a group of artists so much easier! The whole event became a pivotal moment for the project, bringing people together in a way I could never have anticipated, and which has altered my thinking about the future of the project. The weekend I spent at Clayhill Arts was a very welcome change of scenery to my otherwise urban setting. I felt calmed yet invigorated by the surroundings, and the accommodation was beautifully tasteful and very homely. The main space is wonderfully considered and very versatile - an ideal space for creativity and dynamic discussion. I left on the Sunday feeling energised and inspired by the experience of staying at Clayhill.
As a singer it has been one of the best spaces to sing in with generous reverberation and acoustics. It is a space which complemented the type of instruments I was working with and the songs.
I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed being at your venue. It is a lovely and inspiring artistic space. The food was fantastic, homely yet unusual. I really enjoyed the day.
As an artist retreat, the venue at Clayhill Arts provided a warm and welcoming environment, allowing a safe and constructive space where individuals creative needs can be met.
We were lucky enough to be able to take over the whole venue for a weekend, using the Granary as our base for experimentation, discussion and shared learning. The informality of the accommodation, and the relaxed surroundings, put everyone at ease and offered a space where cooperation and encouragement evolved naturally.
Everything was wonderful! This is a beautiful place. Thank you, we really enjoyed our stay.
Clayhill feels remote which is great but it also is close to Cannington which has everything, so supplies can be bought without travelling a great distance...I also really enjoyed that it is still a working farm, because it feels productive and there is such a lot of life around us which is very inspiring
